The Fourth Trimester does not have to be an overwhelming and isolating time.
The medical system deems postpartum as 6 weeks, some say it is 9 months which is when human babies are at the same stage of development as other newborn mammals, while others acknowledge the end of breastfeeding as the end of Postpartum which in some cultures is up until 7yrs of age.
It’s clear that there is no definitive timeframe for postpartum, which aligns with the varied experiences of each woman, however; across most cultures, the Fourth Trimester is recognized.
Being cared for and supported during Postpartum ensures that you are able to thrive in caring for your baby, the future generation, who will in turn, grow up to take care of their communities and so on.
It safeguards your physical, emotional, hormonal and spiritual wellbeing for long term health and is a form of preventive healthcare.
Despite this, Postpartum support is often overlooked within the modern world and even seen as "frivolous” or an “indulgence” not just by society at large but by some mothers themselves.
Postpartum invites us to step into our feminine; soft, intuitive, in flow with nature, when most of us operate from our masculine; productive, rational, scheduled.
This in and of itself can be a confronting and challenging component before we even consider all the other aspects of postpartum.
